Viorel Păunescu, a prominent figure in Romanian sports and business, has died at the age of 91. He passed away on Saturday, October 24, following a period of health struggles, including Alzheimer's disease.

Păunescu is best known for his leadership of the Steaua București football club between 1998 and 2003, a period during which he oversaw the transition of the team from the Ministry of National Defense and founded the AFC Steaua association. He also served as the president of the Romanian Swimming Federation from 2005 to 2013. Before his administrative career, he was a competitive handball player for Steaua and Dinamo Bucharest, earning a spot on the Romanian national team.

Beyond sports, Păunescu was a significant figure in Romania's post-communist business landscape. Alongside his brothers, he built an empire in the tourism and hospitality sectors, managing iconic establishments such as the InterContinental Hotel in Bucharest. In honor of his contributions, the Professional Football League (LPF) ordered a moment of silence during all remaining matches of the 13th SuperLiga round.
