Viper Fuels building destroyed by fire in Chemainus, BC
A large blaze erupted at Viper Fuels on Henry Road in Chemainus, British Columbia, shortly after 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, July 26 2026. More than 20 firefighters from the North Cowichan Fire Department, assisted by the RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services, fought the fire for about five hours, containing it around 8:30 a.m. Some of the propane cylinders being refurbished exploded during the incident.
One firefighter suffered a knee injury and was taken to hospital before being released. The cause remains under investigation, with officials saying there is no current evidence of arson. Viper Fuels, a propane‑cylinder recycling and refilling business operating since 1999 and employing eight people, lost a 4,000‑sq‑ft building but expects minimal disruption for its roughly 80 daily customers.
