Vipers and snakes attracted to gardens and homes by common objects

As seasonal garden maintenance begins in September, experts warn that common household objects can attract vipers. According to ANSES, between 300 and 500 snake bites occur annually, with nearly half happening in private gardens. Vipers, such as the asp and common European adder, are ectothermic and often seek out artificial heat sources or shelter near objects like garden tarps, pots, or metal sheets.

Additionally, certain landscaping habits can lead snakes into home attics. Climbing vegetation such as ivy, vines, or climbing roses can act as a ramp, allowing reptiles to reach roofs in search of cool, quiet spaces or food sources like insects and rodents. Maintaining vegetation away from gutters and facades can help reduce the risk of snakes entering residential structures.
