Vipul Misra appointed CEO of SriLankan Airlines
Vipul Misra, an Indian national and aircraft engineering expert, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines, effective September 9, 2026. Misra joined the company in 2024 as Chief Engineer and Accountable Manager. His appointment is considered a notable shift, as the role is typically held by individuals with pilot or financial backgrounds.
The leadership transition occurs as the government-owned flag carrier undergoes a strategic restructuring program to address a severe financial crisis, with accumulated losses approaching 340 billion rupees. The airline is currently working with a committee, supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), to implement reforms aimed at restoring profitability and operational efficiency.
Misra, a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with over twenty years of experience and a Master’s degree in Aviation Law, takes over during a period of intense competition in the South Asian aviation market. SriLankan Airlines operates a fleet of approximately 23 aircraft serving nearly 35 destinations, with its primary revenue source being the Indian market.
