Vir island records record tourism numbers in Croatia

The Croatian island of Vir has reported record-breaking tourism numbers for August 2026, surpassing major destinations like Dubrovnik. According to data from Zadarski list, Vir recorded 947,240 overnight stays, representing a 10.8 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Despite global economic pressures and regional conflicts in the Middle East and Iran, Vir has maintained high visitor numbers. Srđan Liverić, Director of the Vir Tourism Board, attributes this stability to the island’s unique demographic of visitors who own property, homes, or land on the island, creating a more resilient visitor base compared to cities reliant on short-term tourism.

Separately, the island of Krk features the ‘Camino Krk’, a 152-kilometer pilgrimage route established in 2019. Divided into seven stages, the path is inspired by the traditional Camino de Santiago and includes historical sites such as the medieval Sveti Krševan church.
