Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital marks one year of emergency delivery room
The Virgen de la Arrixaca Maternal and Child Hospital in Murcia has marked one year of operating a specialized delivery room within its emergency department designed for precipitous births. Since its implementation, approximately ten women have utilized the space to give birth without the need for transfer to main delivery rooms, allowing for greater privacy and immediate medical response.
The facility is equipped to provide urgent obstetric assistance and newborn resuscitation. Jorge Guillermo Alonso, Director General of Hospital Care, noted that the service is vital for the hospital, which manages an average of 6,000 births annually. The maternal emergency unit is staffed exclusively by specialized midwives.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Murcian Health Service (SMS) to humanize obstetric care. This includes a humanized cesarean program launched last September, which allows eligible women to be accompanied in the operating room by a partner or chosen person to provide emotional support during scheduled procedures.
