Virgen de los Ángeles returns to Cartago Basilica

The image of the Virgen de los Ángeles, known as ‘La Negrita’, returned to its home at the Basilica in Cartago following a month-long stay at the El Carmen Cathedral. The traditional ‘pasada’ procession was marked by massive crowds and colorful displays.

Participants decorated the route with intricate ephemeral carpets made from dyed sawdust, coffee husks, and fresh flowers. Local farmers and parishioners from various diocesan parishes contributed to the decorations to honor the national patroness.

During the religious ceremonies, clergy including Bishop Mario Quirós used the occasion to call for peace in the region. The prayers specifically addressed recent unprecedented violence in Cartago, which has been attributed to disputes between drug trafficking groups, asking for an end to hatred and division.
