Virgen del Rocío begins traditional procession to Almonte
The Virgen del Rocío has begun her traditional seven-year journey, known as ‘La Venida’, from the village of El Rocío to the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Almonte. The procession, which started on Wednesday, August 19, involves carrying the image approximately 15 kilometers along the Camino de los Llanos. The Virgin is dressed in a traditional ‘pastora’ outfit, which lacks the royal attributes of her usual attire to facilitate the journey.
To ensure the safety of the thousands of pilgrims and devotees participating in the event, the Guardia Civil has deployed over 150 officers. The security operation includes specialized units such as the cavalry squadron, canine services, drones, and aerial support, with coordination centralized at the COS Rocío.
Weather forecasts from Aemet indicate that while the start of the journey may be clear, there is a possibility of scattered showers and high humidity during the overnight trek. The Virgin is expected to arrive in Almonte on Thursday morning, where she will remain in residence until May 2027.
