Virgil Abloh and Kanye West's Complex Creative Partnership Reviewed

Virgil Abloh began working with Kanye West around 2007‑2009 as the rapper expanded his interests into design and fashion. Their collaboration helped translate West’s musical eras into visual concepts and positioned both as prominent Black creatives in an industry that had been largely unwelcoming.

Abloh later founded the Off‑White label and became the first Black artistic director at Louis Vuitton, while also contributing to A$AP Rocky’s 2013 debut album and directing the “Fashion Killa” video. In recent interviews, Rocky suggested that West’s jealousy over Abloh’s rising fashion stature may have strained their relationship, though West has acknowledged feeling jealous himself.

The partnership, marked by mentorship, competition, and occasional tension, is regarded as one of the most consequential creative alliances of their generation, influencing both hip‑hop culture and high fashion.
