Virgil van Dijk commits to two more years with Netherlands

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has committed to continuing his international career for at least two more years following a meeting with new head coach Xavi Hernández. The decision follows speculation that the 35-year-old defender might retire after the recent World Cup.

During a press conference, Van Dijk expressed frustration regarding media criticism and false claims surrounding the team's tactical decisions during the World Cup. He specifically addressed rumors that he was responsible for the team's five-defender system against Morocco, calling such claims ‘nonsense’ and stating that tactical plans are determined by the technical staff.

Van Dijk noted that while he felt a lack of external appreciation in the Netherlands, his conversation with Xavi provided the necessary confidence and respect to move forward. He also expressed anticipation for an upcoming Nations League match against Germany, which will feature a reunion with his former Liverpool manager, Jürgen Klopp.
