Virgin Australia and Qantas report divergent FY2026 financial results
Australian airlines Virgin Australia and Qantas Airways have released their fiscal year 2026 financial results, showing divergent performance trends.
Virgin Australia reported a significant increase in profit, with underlying profit rising by approximately 13.4% to 22%. This growth was largely attributed to effective fuel hedging strategies and improved income per seat. Following these results, the airline announced its maiden shareholder dividend.
In contrast, Qantas Airways experienced a downturn in profit. To address this, the company announced several strategic changes, including the early retirement of its A380 fleet, updates to its frequent flyer loyalty scheme, and investments in new business class seating for its 787 Dreamliners and A321XLR aircraft. Despite the dip in profit, Qantas has resumed paying dividends, declaring a final dividend of 19.8 cents per share for the fiscal year.
