Virgin of Carmen festivals observed across Latin America and Spain in July

Communities in several countries marked July 16 – the feast day of the Virgin of Carmen – with religious processions, fairs, concerts and sporting events. In Argentina’s San Luis province, novenas began on July 7 and will run through July 15, drawing thousands of pilgrims to villages such as Villa Mercedes and Los Manantiales. Spain’s town of Ochavillo del Río opened its 2026 fair on Thursday, July 16, with a procession, fireworks and multiple band performances that will continue through the weekend. In Peru’s Sicuani diocese, the fourth day of the novena featured a Mass presided by Father Alain Rado Choquevilca and a gift presentation to local companies. Chile hosted a series of celebrations: a cantata in La Carmelita on July 11, a maritime procession in Vigo (Spain) honoring lost seafarers, and a large boat procession in Puerto de la Cruz on the Canary Islands. Costa Rica’s University of Costa Rica documented the centennial “Virgen del Mar” maritime procession in Puntarenas, while Panama prepared for the patronal festivities of Santa Librada in Las Tablas with a traditional sea‑run of the image. Colombia’s transport community honored the Virgin as patron of drivers with a river procession in Guamal, and Guatemala’s historic Ermita del Cerrito del Carmen will hold its annual celebration on July 16. Additional events included a cycling race in Madrid’s Puente de Vallecas and local bakery breakfasts in Camargo, Spain, all tied to the July celebrations of the Virgin of Carmen, the patroness of sailors, fishermen and many coastal communities.
