Virgin Group to challenge Eurostar with new cross-Channel rail services
Virgin Group has announced plans to enter the cross-Channel rail market, aiming to challenge Eurostar’s long-standing monopoly. The company intends to launch high-speed services through the Channel Tunnel starting in 2030, connecting London with Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam.
To support this expansion, Virgin has signed a €650 million contract with Alstom to purchase 12 Avelia Stream high-speed trains. These trains, which can reach speeds of 300 km/h, will feature a distinctive red and black livery. The fleet will be owned by infrastructure investment firm Equitix and leased to the operator.
The proposed service includes up to 20 daily return trips. Specific targets mentioned by Virgin Group Managing Director Josh Bayliss include 13 daily services between London and Paris, four between London and Brussels, and three between London and Amsterdam. This expansion is expected to add millions of seats annually to the international rail network.
