Virgin Media O2 deploys 24 small cells in Westminster
Virgin Media O2 has deployed 24 new 4G and 5G-capable small cells across the Westminster borough in London to enhance mobile coverage and data capacity. These compact, shoebox-sized base stations are designed to be installed on existing street infrastructure, such as lamp posts, making them suitable for areas with strict conservation and planning restrictions.
The deployment aims to support the high volume of mobile traffic generated by residents, businesses, tourists, and commuters in one of the UK’s busiest districts. This initiative is part of O2’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan, which focuses on targeted infrastructure investment to future-proof its UK network.
With this rollout, O2 reports having more than 2,500 live small cell sites across the UK, including locations such as Bath, Plymouth, Bristol, Swansea, and Guildford. The company claims this represents the largest small cell deployment by any mobile network operator in the country.
