Virgin of Carmen Celebrations Attract Thousands in Spain and Peru

In Huelva, Spain, the annual procession of the Virgin of Carmen moved through the city streets to the riverfront, drawing hundreds of residents despite high temperatures. The ritual included a traditional blessing of the waters, homage to deceased mariners, and participation by local authorities, religious brotherhoods and coastal workers.

In Sicuani, Peru, the eighth day of the novena honoring the same patroness was marked by a solemn Mass celebrated by Bishop César Augusto Huerta Ramírez and attended by police, agricultural officials and parishioners. A portrait of the Virgin was presented to the invited institutions as a symbol of protection for their communities.

Both events highlight the deep cultural and maritime ties that the Virgin of Carmen holds for communities in southern Spain and the Andean highlands of Peru.
