Virgin of Carmen scapular marks 775th anniversary in Salamanca

The Diocese of Salamanca celebrated the 775th anniversary of the Virgin of Carmen delivering the scapular to Saint Simon Stock in 1251. According to the Carmelite tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the prior general of the Order, promising the scapular as a sign of protection and love, and promising spiritual benefits to those who wear it.

The scapular, originally a work apron, evolved into a small sacramental worn by Carmelites and lay faithful as a visible sign of devotion to Mary and the Carmelite family. Father Alejandro López of the San Andrés convent explained the historical background, the spiritual meaning of “being educated and protected” by Mary, and how the devotion spread beyond the Order. A children‑focused version of the story was also shared by MDC Kids, emphasizing the same legend and the annual July 16 celebration of the Virgin of Carmen, patron of sailors and fishermen.
