Virgin of El Rocío reaches Almonte after 20-hour procession
The Virgin of El Rocío, also known as the 'Blanca Paloma', arrived at the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Almonte following a 20-hour procession from the village of El Rocío. The religious image was carried approximately 15.7 kilometers through the night, arriving at 9:35 a.m. on Thursday amidst thousands of devotees. Due to light summer rain, organizers utilized a transparent waterproof covering to protect the centuries-old image during the journey.
The religious figure will remain in the Almonte parish church until the next Pentecost pilgrimage in 2027. This year's arrival coincides with the Rociero Jubilee Year, which emphasizes prayer and pilgrimage.
Authorities reported that the security and emergency operation, known as 'Plan Venida', concluded without serious incidents. While mobile network issues were noted, the coordinated response from health, security, and traffic services managed the large crowds. Medical services provided 257 total assistances, most of which were for minor ailments such as exhaustion, heat-related issues, or minor injuries, with eight patients requiring ambulance transfers.
