Virgin Trains secures UK approval for London-Europe rail services
Virgin Trains has received approval from the UK's Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to operate services from London St Pancras via High Speed 1, marking a significant step toward challenging Eurostar's long-standing monopoly on cross-Channel rail travel.
The authorization allows the company, owned by Richard Branson, to run up to 20 daily return journeys between London and destinations including Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The approved access period is scheduled to run from October 1, 2030, through December 31, 2040.
While the ORR has granted track access, several hurdles remain. Virgin Trains must still secure permission from Eurotunnel to use the Channel Tunnel itself, purchase new rolling stock, and obtain necessary safety certifications from both British and European authorities. The entry of new operators like Virgin Trains, alongside others such as Trenitalia France, Evolyn, and Gemini Trains, is expected to increase competition in the sector.
