Virginia allocates record $304 million for agricultural conservation

Virginia has allocated a record $304 million to the Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practices Cost-Share Program (VACS) for the 2027 fiscal year. This represents an $81 million increase over the previous fiscal year and marks the fifth consecutive year of record funding for the initiative.

Administered by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation in partnership with 47 soil and water conservation districts, the program provides financial and technical assistance to farmers. The funds support over 60 approved conservation practices, such as planting cover crops, developing nutrient-management plans, and implementing rotational grazing.

These efforts aim to improve soil health, protect water quality, and support long-term agricultural sustainability. The practices are noted as particularly vital for the Eastern Shore to reduce nutrients and sediment entering the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coastal waters. Depending on program requirements, farmers may qualify for up to $300,000 in state cost-share reimbursement.
