Virginia Bishop urges Catholics to vote against constitutional amendments

Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington is urging Catholics in Virginia to vote against two proposed constitutional amendments appearing on the November 3 ballot.

Through the ‘Catholics Vote No’ campaign, Burbidge has characterized the first amendment, designated as ballot question one, as an ‘extreme and unnecessary’ measure that would expand abortion access throughout pregnancy and remove parental consent requirements for minors. He stated the amendment could allow for ‘unregulated abortion, performed by unlicensed practitioners at any time during pregnancy.’

The second amendment, ballot question two, seeks to change the state constitution’s definition of marriage. Burbidge argues this would remove the current language defining marriage as being between one man and one woman, which he claims would ‘enshrine gender ideology.’

As part of a monthlong effort, Burbidge is encouraging followers to pray and fast on Fridays throughout October to oppose these initiatives. While noting the Catholic Church is not partisan, he emphasized the institution’s role in speaking on matters of faith and morals.
