Virginia college basketball preseason updates

Virginia Tech men’s basketball recently participated in a scrimmage against Maryland, which the Hokies won. The scrimmage was organized by assistant coach J. D. Byers and facilitated by Maryland assistant Wabissa Bede. Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young noted the positive experience of having former coach Buzz Williams back in the building.

The Hokies are scheduled to open their 2026-27 season against Coppin State in Blacksburg, followed by a game against Mercer. Their first major test will occur on November 10 against the Iowa Hawkeyes in Sioux City, Iowa.

Meanwhile, the University of Virginia men’s basketball team is preparing for its season opener against Drexel at John Paul Jones Arena. The Hoos enter the season with ACC Preseason Player of the Year Thijs De Ridder returning alongside Sam Lewis, Johann Grünloh, and Chance Mallory. The team aims to build upon a 30-win season under coach Ryan Odom.
