Virginia voters to decide on reproductive rights constitutional amendment

Virginia voters will decide on a proposed constitutional amendment this November regarding reproductive healthcare. Known as Ballot Question 1, the amendment seeks to establish a fundamental right to personal decisions concerning prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, birth control, abortion, miscarriage management, and fertility care. It also aims to protect medical professionals and patients from legal repercussions related to these decisions.

The proposal has drawn significant debate. Supporters, including groups like Virginians for Reproductive Freedom, have raised over $2.8 million to advocate for the amendment. Opponents, such as the committee 'No Safeguards, No Deal', have raised approximately $263,887. Religious leaders, including bishops from the Anglican Church in North America, have urged voters to reject the amendment, citing concerns regarding the sanctity of life and the protection of the unborn.

Critics of the amendment also express concerns regarding parental rights and the potential for minors to access abortion services without parental involvement. Conversely, proponents note that Virginia is currently the only Southern state without significant abortion restrictions, and a study indicated that 63 percent of Virginians favor legal abortion access.
