Virginia data centers face tax break repeal push and resident noise complaints

State senators Mamie Locke and Louise Lucas are urging Virginia lawmakers to end the sales and use tax exemption that subsidizes data centers. The exemption, extended through 2035, is estimated to cost the Commonwealth about $2 billion a year, which the senators say diverts funds needed for education, public safety, and Medicaid. While the House of Delegates’ budget plan does not repeal the exemption, a commission could be created to study its impact.

In Loudoun County, residents near the Vantage Data Center have reported a persistent high‑pitched whine from the facility’s generators. Some have blocked windows with mattresses and plexiglass to muffle the sound, alleging the noise exceeds local limits of 55–60 decibels. The company claims it remains within permissible limits. Data centers generate nearly half of the county’s property tax revenue but also consume about 26 % of Virginia’s electricity, raising concerns about energy costs and quality of life.
