Virginia field hockey defeats Penn State in overtime season opener

The No. 5 ranked Virginia field hockey team opened their 2026 season with a 4-3 overtime victory against Penn State at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.

Virginia established an early lead with goals from Rylee Dennis and Riley Savage, followed by a third goal from Livvy Barker. However, Penn State mounted a late comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring three goals in less than six minutes to tie the match at 3-3.

Mia Abello secured the win for the Cavaliers by scoring on a penalty corner during the overtime period. Virginia goalkeeper Nilou Lempers recorded three saves during the match, while Penn State's Aby Deverka also recorded three saves.
