Virginia Governor Spanberger introduces data center accountability framework
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has introduced a new regulatory framework to increase data center accountability and established the state’s first artificial intelligence task force via Executive Order 22. The order includes a ban on nondisclosure agreements for executive branch employees to increase transparency regarding the industry's impact on energy and water resources.
The move has drawn mixed reactions. The Piedmont Environmental Council criticized the plan for failing to implement a moratorium on new data center developments. Meanwhile, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce warned that the framework could undermine the state’s economic competitiveness, noting that the data center industry contributes $5.34 billion in tax revenue and supports 74,000 jobs.
In a separate economic initiative, Governor Spanberger announced more than $5 million in Growth and Opportunity for Virginia (GO Virginia) grants. These funds are designated for four strategic projects aimed at strengthening regional industries through technological readiness, workforce development, and expanded accelerator programming.
