Virginia Governor Spanberger's semiautomatic rifle ban faces legal challenge

Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger signed Senate Bill 749 in May, prohibiting the sale of modern semiautomatic rifles—often labeled "assault weapons"—and magazines holding more than 15 rounds. The ban, which includes popular models such as the AR‑15, takes effect on July 1.

A coalition of gun‑rights groups and firearms industry companies, including the NRA, Second Amendment Foundation and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, has filed a petition for a preliminary injunction. They seek a hearing before June 19 to halt enforcement while the law is litigated, arguing that the measure infringes on constitutional rights and would harm law‑abiding Virginians.

Critics note that rifles account for a small fraction of violent crimes in the state and question the law’s efficacy in improving public safety. The case will determine whether Virginia’s new restrictions can be enforced during the ongoing court battle.
