Virginia health officials confirm measles case and warn of rising infections

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) confirmed a measles infection in a child aged 5‑12 in Buckingham County, stating the virus is likely circulating locally and that additional unreported cases probably exist. Epidemiologist Emily Rich said, “We believe it’s highly likely that they must have been exposed to measles here in Virginia,” and urged residents to ensure their MMR vaccinations are up to date.

State and federal agencies are preparing for a broader uptick in measles as summer travel resumes. CDC data show 1,814 measles cases nationwide this year, with more than 900 in South Carolina and Virginia; Virginia has reported about 20‑22 cases. The agency has issued guidance to health departments for rapid reporting, contact tracing, and outreach to under‑vaccinated communities.
