Virginia implements digital driver's licenses in Apple Wallet

Virginia residents can now add their driver's licenses or state IDs to Apple Wallet, according to an announcement by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This digital identification allows users to verify their identity and age via iPhone or Apple Watch without needing to hand over their physical devices.

Starting immediately, these digital IDs are accepted at security checkpoints in 250 airports across the United States, including Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport. Additionally, the digital IDs can be used at DMV offices, ABC liquor stores, and select businesses throughout Virginia.

Virginia's adoption follows a growing trend in the United States, where 13 states and Puerto Rico now support digital driver's licenses and state IDs within the Apple Wallet ecosystem. This expansion began in Arizona in early 2022 and has since grown to include states such as Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, Hawaii, California, Iowa, New Mexico, Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Illinois.
