Virginia judge orders Shenandoah schools to drop Confederate names
U.S. District Judge Michael F. Urbanski ruled that Shenandoah County’s school board violated Black students’ rights under the 14th Amendment’s equal‑protection clause and the Equal Educational Opportunities Act by reinstating Confederate military names to two schools. The board had voted 5‑1 to rename Mountain View High School back to Stonewall Jackson High School and Honey Run Elementary back to Ashby‑Lee Elementary, which combine the names of Gen. Robert E. Lee and Turner Ashby. Urbanski ordered the board to select new, nondiscriminatory names “with all deliberate speed.”
The lawsuit was filed by the Virginia NAACP on behalf of six students and their parents. The NAACP Virginia State Conference called the decision a “decisive victory” for students, emphasizing that the restored names were “vestiges of segregation” that cause racially disproportionate harm.
