Virginia mother convicted after letting 5-year-old walk to community pond

Karyann Parkinson, a mother of five living in Williamsburg, Virginia, has been convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The conviction stems from an incident where she allowed her 5-year-old son to walk approximately half a mile alone through their gated community to a pond to collect goose feathers.

While the child walked along a sidewalk separated from the road by 10 feet of grass and used crosswalks, a passerby alerted community security. The situation escalated to include police and Child Protective Services (CPS) officers. Following an investigation, CPS substantiated allegations of abuse and neglect, placing Parkinson on the state’s child abuse and neglect registry for seven years.

A judge convicted Parkinson of the first-degree misdemeanor and issued a six-month jail sentence. The sentence was immediately suspended pending good behavior and compliance with CPS conditions. Parkinson expressed concern that the conviction and registry status may prevent her from volunteering at her children's schools.
