Virginia mother convicted for letting 5-year-old walk alone

Karyann Parkinson has been convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in Williamsburg, Virginia, after allowing her five-year-old son to walk alone to a nearby pond to collect goose feathers.

The incident occurred in a gated community known as Ford's Colony. A security guard intercepted the child and contacted authorities, leading to an investigation by the police and Child Protective Services. Parkinson was subsequently convicted in a bench trial and received a six-month suspended jail sentence.

In addition to the criminal conviction, Parkinson has been placed on the Virginia Child Abuse and Neglect Registry for seven years. This designation prevents her from participating in her children's school activities until her son reaches sixth grade. Parkinson has expressed that the situation is an instance of bureaucratic overreach and intends to appeal the conviction, which is expected in January.
