Virginia State University faces lawsuit over Christian club policies

Virginia State University is facing a federal lawsuit filed by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) alleging unconstitutional discrimination against Christian student organizations. The lawsuit claims the university’s recent policy changes target student-led ministries, specifically the Women of Victory and Bethel Campus Fellowship, by barring them from holding registered student organization status or affiliating with their national chapters.

According to the ADF, the new policy places these Christian clubs under the sole authority of the university’s campus minister, who holds complete discretion over religious meetings, events, and guest speakers. The lawsuit alleges that while these Christian groups are being restricted, other non-Christian religious organizations, such as the Muslim Students Association and the VSU Community Faith Alliance, are explicitly exempted from these rules.

ADF attorney Tyson Langhofer stated that the university is “brazenly singling out Christian clubs and treating them worse than student groups of other faiths,” arguing that the policy violates First Amendment rights regarding the freedom of association.
