Virginia Storms Produce Wind Damage and Power Outages Across the State

The National Weather Service warned of severe thunderstorms across southwest Virginia, with damaging wind gusts near 60‑70 mph, heavy rain, large hail and isolated tornado risk. Cities such as Roanoke, Blacksburg, Wytheville, Martinsville, Danville, Bluefield and Lewisburg were advised to secure outdoor items and prepare for possible power outages.

In central Virginia, a storm that passed over Farmville generated straight‑line winds of at least 70 mph, toppling trees, snapping power lines and causing widespread damage to homes, businesses and roads. Residents reported downed trees on High Street and Cedar Lane, and the town experienced extensive power outages. Farmville Fire Department Chief Daniel Clark coordinated emergency calls from about 11:30 p.m., while town officials and Dominion Energy crews worked through the night to clear debris and restore electricity. No tornadoes were confirmed, but the event highlighted the region’s vulnerability to severe wind events.
