Virginia Tech defeats VMI 73-3 in James Franklin's debut
Virginia Tech opened the James Franklin era with a dominant 73-3 victory over VMI at Lane Stadium. The Hokies' offense was highly efficient, scoring on its first six possessions and totaling 619 yards.
Running backs Jeffrey Overton Jr. and Marcellous Hawkins Jr. led the ground attack. Overton rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries, while Hawkins contributed 69 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, a transfer from Penn State, completed 17 of 20 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns in his debut.
The Virginia Tech defense held VMI to just 83 total yards and recorded 18 tackles for loss. Special teams also contributed significantly, blocking two punts, one of which was recovered for a touchdown.
Following the win, discussions arose regarding NCAA rules after a player was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct following a high-five with members of the VMI Corps of Cadets.
