Virginia Tech football begins 2026 season preparations under James Franklin

Virginia Tech football has entered a new era under head coach James Franklin as the team begins preparations for the 2026 season. Following the departure of previous coaching staff, Franklin has integrated Brent Pry into the coaching staff as defensive coordinator to rebuild the program.

A performance ranking by Bill Connelly placed the Hokies at the sixth tier of the 138 FBS teams, a category described as “Probably good. Maybe good. Possibly mediocre.” While the team faces challenges, such as a defense that previously allowed 2.8 points per play on drives initiated on their side of the field, there is optimism regarding the roster improvements made during the offseason.

During fall camp in Blacksburg, individual players are gaining recognition. Running back Marcellous Hawkins has been named one of 113 nominees for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, which honors community service and leadership. Additionally, defensive tackle Kemari Copeland was featured on The Athletic’s annual “Freaks List.”
