Virginia Tech football faces need for evolution, says James Franklin

James Franklin has addressed the challenges facing the Virginia Tech football program following the era of legendary coach Frank Beamer. Franklin suggested that the program's difficulties stemmed from a failure to evolve alongside the modern landscape of athletic departments. He noted that while the university holds a deep tradition, it must embrace philosophical changes to avoid being left behind by the dramatic shifts in college athletics over the last 15 years.

Frank Beamer established a significant baseline of success during his 29-season tenure, recording 235 wins and reaching the 1999 BCS National Championship. Since his retirement in 2015, the program has struggled to maintain that standard through subsequent coaching changes. To support a new direction, the school recently approved a $229.2 million athletics investment plan.
