Virginia Voters Face Rising Costs Ahead of August Primary Election

Virginia’s primary election is set for August 4, with voters weighing a range of issues as they choose nominees for U.S. Senate, the House and local offices. Residents repeatedly cited the cost of living – especially soaring gasoline, food and electricity prices – as the top concern, linking higher prices to the war in Iran and broader supply‑chain pressures. Some also expressed worries about the proliferation of data centers and their environmental impact.

The primary ballot includes seven Democratic candidates for the U.S. House District 1 seat, such as Elizabeth Dempsey Beggs and Salaam Bhatti, while incumbent Republican Rep. Rob Wittman will run for re‑election in November without a Republican primary challenger. For the U.S. Senate, three Republicans – Kim Farrington, Bert K. Mizusawa and David Earl Williams – seek the party nomination, with Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Warner slated for re‑election.
