Virginia Walmart assault leads to death of 77-year-old man

A 77-year-old Filipino-American man, Bert Atienza, died from blunt-force trauma following an assault at a Walmart in Norfolk, Virginia. The incident occurred on June 7 after Atienza confronted a 17-year-old female employee regarding a shopping cart incident involving his wife, Josephine Atienza.

According to reports, after the exchange, the teenage employee allegedly threw a can at the couple and summoned her parents. Erika Mitchell, 42, and Travis White, 44, arrived at the store and confronted Atienza. Witnesses stated the couple punched Atienza in the face and kicked him while he was on the ground. Atienza died in the hospital the following day.

Mitchell and White have been charged with second-degree murder and are being held without bond. The 17-year-old employee has also been charged with assault and battery, aggravated malicious wounding, and conspiracy to commit a felony. She is currently being held in a juvenile facility.
