Virginia Water Authority Clarifies Drought Measures and Google Data Center Water Use

The City of Newport News in Virginia urges residents to stay safe during extreme heat and to conserve water as the region experiences prolonged drought and low rainfall. Recommendations include watering lawns only when needed, fixing leaks, limiting outdoor water use during peak heat, and checking on vulnerable neighbors.

Separately, the Western Virginia Water Authority addressed rumors that the Google data‑center project would consume up to 11 million gallons of water per day. The Authority clarified that the contract caps the facility’s draw at 2 million gallons per day, while the authority normally processes about 21 million gallons daily for the community. Officials said the existing infrastructure can accommodate the data center without jeopardising residential supply.
