Virginia woman wins $2 million lottery prize
A female office worker from Portsmouth, Virginia, won a $2 million top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Platinum 7s game. After purchasing the $20 ticket during her lunch break at a Love Food Mart in Norfolk, she discovered her win immediately after scratching the ticket.
Despite the life-changing news, the winner returned to her workplace to continue her shift as usual. She opted to receive her winnings as a single lump-sum cash payment of $952,000 before taxes, rather than the full $2 million distributed over 30 years.
Under current privacy provisions, the winner was able to keep her identity confidential. While previous laws in Virginia only protected the anonymity of winners with prizes exceeding $10 million, upcoming legislative changes scheduled for July 2026 are expected to expand these privacy rights to all Virginia Lottery winners unless they consent to public disclosure.
