Virginia Woolf: The modernist author and feminist icon

Virginia Woolf was a central figure of 20th-century modernist literature, known for her innovative use of the stream of consciousness technique. Her works, such as ‘Mrs. Dalloway’ (1925), explore the deep internal thoughts of characters through a diffuse narrative style.

Other significant works include ‘Orlando’ (1928), a novel inspired by the life of Vita Sackville-West that explores themes of gender and emancipation across centuries, and her pioneering feminist essay ‘A Room of One's Own’ (1929).

Woolf’s life was marked by mental health struggles, including depression and anxiety. In 1941, she died by suicide in the River Ouse near her home in Sussex, leaving a final letter to her husband, Leonard Woolf, expressing gratitude for his support. Together, the couple founded the Hogarth Press, which published various significant literary works.
