Virginia's 5th Congressional District Primary Race Draws National Attention

Virginia voters are heading to the polls for contested primaries in the state's only congressional district. In the 5th District, Republicans will choose between incumbent Rep. John McGuire and challenger Melanie Lucero, while Democrats will decide among former Rep. Tom Perriello, commentator Robert Tracinski and physician Suzanne Krzyzanowski. Campaign finance data show Perriello leading with about $2.1 million raised and McGuire with $1.7 million. The race has been added to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “Districts in Play” list, highlighting its national relevance.

Separately, a University of Virginia research team led by Dr. Jessica Kimpell Johnson is advising state lawmakers on moving Virginia’s off‑cycle gubernatorial and other state elections onto the federal election calendar. Their analysis suggests that consolidating elections would boost voter turnout, especially among groups that face barriers in off‑year contests, and could reshape the state's political landscape.
