Journalist Virginie Sainsily has sparked controversy on social media following her commentary on footballer Désiré Doué’s performance during a match against Belgium.

During a broadcast on La Chaîne L'Équipe, Sainsily used a romantic metaphor to describe the player's inconsistency. She compared his fluctuating form to a “toxic relationship,” suggesting that while he occasionally delivers exceptional performances, he often “ghosts” fans by failing to maintain that level of play. She stated, “We want that every night, Désiré! It is 2026, we want healthy relationships and we want to be able to love you with all our hearts.”

The remarks drew significant backlash online, with many users directing sexist comments toward Sainsily and questioning her legitimacy as a female football journalist. Canal+ journalist Margot Dumont expressed disgust regarding the nature of the social media reactions, though she did not comment on the substance of Sainsily's original remarks.
