Virologists discuss common respiratory pathogens

More than 200 different viruses can cause cold-like symptoms. According to virologist Prof. Sandra Ciesek from Frankfurt University Medical Center, rhinoviruses are the most common cause and peak during autumn and spring. Other significant pathogens include adenoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), SARS-CoV-2, and influenza viruses, which are more prevalent in winter.

For most healthy individuals, identifying the specific virus is often irrelevant as treatment typically focuses on managing symptoms. However, distinguishing between pathogens is useful for assessing risk. While most cold viruses remain in the nasal and throat area, viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and influenza can spread to the lungs or heart.

Identifying the specific pathogen is particularly important for high-risk groups, including the elderly, pregnant women, the chronically ill, and immunosuppressed individuals, as specific therapeutic options may be available for certain infections.
