Virtual fencing collars protect livestock from wildfires in Sierra Norte

Virtual fencing collars, subsidized by the Diputación de Guadalajara, proved essential in protecting livestock during recent wildfires in the Sierra Norte region, specifically during the La Mierla fire.

Farmers reported using the technology in various ways to safeguard their animals. Fernando Moreno, president of the Asociación de Ganaderos de la Sierra Norte, used the collars to group cattle near urban areas to avoid flames in La Nava, while in Alcorlo, he disconnected the collars to allow cattle to move freely away from the fire. Other local ranchers, including Óscar de la Torre and Fernando Sánchez, noted that the GPS technology allowed them to maintain control and monitor the exact location of their herds during the crisis.

The subsidy program was originally established in 2025 to protect livestock from wolf attacks, with 18 farms receiving aid last year. The program's effectiveness in wildfire management has highlighted its additional utility for agricultural security.
