Virtual fencing technology adopted by Spanish livestock farmers
Livestock farmers in Spain are increasingly adopting ‘virtual fencing’ technology to address challenges such as rural depopulation, wildfire prevention, and predator management. These systems utilize GPS technology and smart collars, allowing farmers to confine and direct animals via mobile applications without the need for traditional physical fences or electric shepherds.
In Galicia, the Xunta has launched a pilot project for cattle using virtual fencing to optimize forest fire prevention. By directing cattle to specific areas, the technology facilitates natural brush clearing to reduce fire risks near residential zones. The system also allows for 24-hour monitoring of animal positions and routines to improve animal welfare and detect health issues.
Additionally, the Diputación de Guadalajara has introduced subsidies to help extensive and semi-extensive cattle farmers acquire these collars. The goal is to provide tools that protect livestock from wolf attacks and allow for the rapid grouping of animals during emergencies.
