Virtual reality reduces pain and fear in children with bone fractures

An international research study conducted by Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University (BŞEÜ), in collaboration with Dokuz Eylül University and Eskişehir Osmangazi University, has found that virtual reality (VR) headsets significantly reduce pain and fear in children undergoing bone fracture treatment.

The study involved 51 children aged 6 to 12 who were receiving non-surgical repositioning for forearm fractures. During the procedure, children watched age-appropriate 360-degree videos through VR headsets. Results published in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing indicate that the VR application markedly lowered pain and fear levels compared to a control group.

Researchers also observed positive physiological effects, including stabilized heart rates and oxygen saturation levels, with no reported side effects or negative reactions to the technology. The study highlights the potential for low-cost, patient-centered healthcare improvements, as the method can be easily integrated into routine hospital procedures.
