Virtual reality technology expands into mental health and dementia care

Virtual reality (VR) technology is increasingly being utilized in mental health and geriatric care to provide immersive therapeutic experiences. In mental health applications, platforms like BehaVR integrate VR exposure therapy, biometrics, and AI-driven personalization to treat conditions such as anxiety, phobias, and PTSD. The global market for VR mental health therapy was valued at USD 1.83 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 10.71 billion by 2032.

In geriatric medicine, VR headsets are being explored to manage neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia patients. Controlled exposure to virtual environments, such as nature landscapes, can help reduce agitation, anxiety, and apathy by stimulating memory pathways and reducing physiological stress markers like cortisol levels. However, clinical deployment requires strict oversight to prevent adverse effects such as disorientation or cybersickness, and effectiveness varies based on the stage of the patient's condition.
