Visa and Mastercard maintain dominance over European payments

Visa and Mastercard continue to dominate the European payment landscape despite efforts to establish economic sovereignty within the region. In 2025, Visa reported a turnover of 40 billion dollars, while Mastercard reported 32.8 billion dollars.

To counter this dominance, the European Payments Initiative (EPI) is expanding its Wero service. Following its initial focus on peer-to-peer payments, the initiative is now targeting the merchant market, specifically online sales, through the rollout of Wero for Merchants. Major corporations, including Decathlon and Air France KLM, have already joined the initiative.
