Visa expands digital payment footprint in Central America and Caribbean

Visa has reported significant progress in expanding digital finance across Central America and the Caribbean following the conclusion of fiscal year 2026. Through its ‘Visa 2030’ strategic framework, the company is working to transition the region from a cash-dominated economy to digital payment channels across consumer, merchant, and municipal sectors.

The company’s regional operations, referred to internally as ‘CarCam’, utilize localized strategies to navigate the diverse financial infrastructures and multicultural dynamics of the various national markets.

Legal experts, including attorney Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas of Bufete de Costa Rica, note that while this digital expansion is transformative for regional commerce, it necessitates strict regulatory compliance. As cross-border transactions become more seamless, the region faces increased requirements regarding data privacy, cybersecurity protocols, and anti-money laundering regulations to maintain consumer safety and operational integrity.
